Draped Cloth

For this month's Rookie Painter challenge I did a preliminary sketch, for a pastel painting. I liked the result and decided to post it.   2H graphite pencil on white Bristol Board. 8"x12"

ADNW November Challenge

This was sketched for  ADNW, with a black gel pen, which unfortunately turned out to be water soluble. I had planned for it to be pen and coloured wash, but it would have turned muddy.

Lis's Cat Phoebe

This is the first black cat that I have painted in any medium. I used Pitt pastel pencils on anthracite Pastelmat. To obtain a rich black, I under painted the darkest fur with prussian blue, then I used black and various greys, pale blue and white to model it.

SILHOUETTE

I liked the girl's profile taken from the current A Day Not Wasted challenge. I drew it with a variety of white coloured pencils on black Canford paper. It looks brighter than my actual drawing, because I couldn't produce a decent black with a straight forward scan! The paper was rather furry to work on, I prefer a smoother paper for CP work. I worked with a reversed image because strangely I find it a lot easier if the person, or animal for that matter, is looking to the left! I wonder if other artists suffer from this quirk? I notice I've signed it 2001. Wishful thinking, perhaps?

Wooden Door (detail)

This is for the Paint and Draw Challenge September challenge. The wood was brushed on with coloured inks and then the grain was drawn with various sizes of black and sepia gel pens, on paper.

ONIONS

For this month's Rookie Painter challenge. I sketched the out line with a home made bamboo pen dipped in water soluble black ink and then used coloured inks.

Another Still Life

I enjoyed the last challenge, so I decided to set up my own still life using a vase made by the monks on Caldy Island.

Jug and Peaches

The current Paint and Draw Challenge. Acrylic on paper, 8"x12".        I used ultramarine, alizarin crimson and a touch of burnt sienna to make the black. I limited my palette to three other colours --- cadmium yellow light, titanium white and light green, all made by Liquitex.

Squirrels

The latest Paint and Draw Challenge . Black pen (edding 1800 profipen 0.1 and 0.3) on white card, 10"x7".
I find trying to make the card appear white very difficult.

The red squirrel was drawn a couple of years ago.

Dog Portraits

I have joined another art challenge A Day Not Wasted and this was the April project. I used pastel pencils on Pastelmat card. Size 6"x7".

Dog portraiture is my favourite subject. Here are some of my previous paintings:

Cherries

5"x 6"

This is in response to the April Paint and Draw Challenge. I used mainly pastel pencils on dark grey Pastelmat.

Persimmon

This painting was in response to the latest  Paint and Draw Challenge.  I used gouache on blue mount board. I haven't used gouache often as I find it very difficult to layer. I wonder if I should use fixative in between. The painting is very small (3"x 3.5") as I am still having a lot of trouble with my fractured shoulder!

Study in Blue and Orange

This was painted in response to the current Paint and Draw Challenge. I used soft pastels on white Pastelmat

Imperfection (another Monarch Butterfly)

I took a photo of this butterfly at Syon Park butterfly house, and painted it in coloured pencil two years ago. I call it "Imperfection" because one of its wings was slightly damaged.

Monarch Butterfly

Unfortunately I had a bad fall about 6 weeks ago and fractured my right shoulder, and have been unable to do any painting as I need to support my arm. This picture is in response to the current Paint and Draw Together Challenge. I used Pitt pastel pencils on light grey Pastelmat.   6"x8"
